How to manage jailbreak PlayStation 5 using a PS4 exploit?

Hackers have been hanging around the PS5 for almost a year now, and it looks like they’ve finally managed to jailbreak the 2020 console’s hardware with a new kernel-level exploit first discovered on the PS4 . While it doesn’t allow access to run certain types of code, the exploit has made it possible for at least one person to run Hideo Kojima ‘s mythical Silent Hill demo , their PlayStation 5 , and will likely have massive implications as more people explore this jailbreak

The PlayStation 5 IPV6 kernel exploit , discovered by so-called “PlayStation hacking god ” Andy “TheFloW” Nguyen back in September , now has a way to be implemented, as hacker SpecterDev explained in a recent tweet. It is based on a previously known vulnerability in Webkit, the PlayStation ‘s web browser technology , which works on PS5 consoles running firmware 4.03 and possibly older versions as well.

The exploit works by making the PS5 access a web server hosted on a local PC that contains SpecterDev’s implementation of the hack. It apparently works about 30% of the time, giving users access to the console’s debug mode and thus allowing them to run software outside of what Sony originally intended.

Here is a demo of the new exploit :

“This exploit gives us read/write access, but not execute access,” reports the console hack blog hacking blog Wololo.net . “This means that there is no possibility to load and execute binaries currently , everything is restricted within the scope of the ROP chain. However, the current implementation enables the debug configuration.”

Still, the initial exploit was enough to allow Dark Souls expert Lance McDonald to install the short-lived abandoned PS4 horror game PT , which isn’t officially compatible with the PS5:

TheFloW discovered the IPV6 webkit exploit two years ago on the PS4. He found it again on the PS5 and reported it to Sony in January 2022. “It appears that your patch was somehow rolled back when doing the migration from FreeBSD9 to FreeBSD11 , ” he recently told Motherboard . TheFloW subsequently received a $ 10,000 reward from Sony and the vulnerability was disclosed site on September 20, 2021.

Since then, others in the PlayStation hacker community have been working on ways to exploit the vulnerability to jailbreak both the disc-based PS5 and its all-digital version. Console makers try to keep their systems locked down in part to prevent hacking, and this jailbreak is likely just the start of hackers poking holes in that security.

Before even getting to the heart of the matter and explaining, in practice,  how to connect PS4 jailbreak controller to iPhone without jailbreak , let me tell you more about the conditions under which this can happen.

As you probably already know, until recently, it was possible to connect the DualShock 4 to the iPhone exclusively using the jailbreak: in detail, it was necessary to use a Cydia tweak to overcome the restrictions imposed by iOS (which, for your information, is the name of the operating system “on board” of iPhones).

With  iOS 13 , however, things have changed: from this version of the operating system, it is in fact possible to pair the iPhone and the DualShock 4 controller via Bluetooth, using the very simple procedure provided by the operating system, which does not require unlocks or modifications in any way.

Therefore, for the connection to be established, it is sufficient that the iPhone in question is at least updated to iOS 13 : the update in question is available for iPhone 6s and later and can be installed using the instructions provided in this tutorial.

When the smartphone is not compatible with iOS 13, you can get around the hurdle by buying a specific controller with official Apple MFI certification , which can be easily paired via Bluetooth (the result, however, varies greatly depending on the type of game used. ).

HOW TO CONNECT PS4 CONTROLLER TO IPHONE WITHOUT JAILBREAKING

Were you able to update your iPhone to iOS 13? Very well! In this case, you will be pleased to know that pairing the “iPhone by” and the DualShock 4 controller is really easy. Do not you believe it? So let me show you.

To start with, set the PS4 pad to “pairing” mode, to allow the smartphone to detect it without problems: after you have completely turned off the controller (by holding down the  PS until the LED turns off), turn it on again by pressing and holding down the  PS and  Share keys until the center LED starts blinking rapidly.

When this happens (a sign that the pad has entered pairing mode), grab your  iPhone , tap the iOS settings icon (it’s the gear -shaped one on the home screen), go to the Bluetooth section : and make sure the switch at the top of the screen is set to  ON , if not, do it yourself.

Now, wait for it, in the list of  detected devices , the PS4 pad related item (eg DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller ) appears, tap on its  name And that’s it! From now on, you can use the panel to control apps and games that support it.

To disconnect/disconnect the PS4 controller from the iPhone, go to the  Settings menu > Bluetooth iOS, tap the button  (I) corresponding to the name of the DualShock 4 and choose whether to  Disconnect or  Disassociate the pad completely, using the following screen.

If you need to pair the DS4 with the PlayStation again, put it back into pairing mode, as I explained above, and connect it to the console using its USB cable. For more explanation, I urge you to consult my generic guide on how to connect the PS4 controller, in which I have shown you, in detail, the steps to follow to succeed in the company on various devices.

HOW TO USE PS4 CONTROLLER ON IPHONE

Once connected between the iPhone and the PS4 controller, you can use the PS4 controller to control apps and games with DS4 support, or to take advantage of Sony’s Remote Play system , which allows you to play titles on PlayStation 4 through your phone’s screen. mobile phone.

iOS Games

As for the management of the PS4 platform within the games (and applications) for iOS , you should know that, in most cases, there is a section in the game (or in the application) designed specifically for this purpose.

For example, to create this guide, I used Asphalt 9: Legends as a reference, a title that is compatible without problems with the different controls that can be associated with the iPhone, including the PlayStation 4.

By default, in this title it is possible to use the directional arrows and / or the left analog to move between the available options, activate the panoramic view of the car, using the right analog, and use the keys. “X” and  “O” , respectively, to confirm a choice and return.

Asphalt 9: Legend also features an area specifically dedicated to command management, which allows you to choose between two different usage modes ( touchdrive gamepad and  handheld controller ) – you can access it by tapping the  button located in the top corner right side of the main game screen and going to the  Settings and  Shifters sections later .

The methods of using the DualShock 4, and any settings for key mapping, however, change from game to game: for information on a specific title, I’d suggest relying on the latter’s guide, or Google more detailed information, using terms like “iPhone [game/application name] controller setup” .
