Vedanta Kalahandi in Talks to Acquire Land for 3 MTPA Aluminium Smelter

Vedanta Limited, one of India’s largest natural resources companies, is making the headlines with its bold investment plans in Odisha. In one of the recent developments, the company has started the land acquisition process for a 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal, and also plans to set up an aluminium park in Jharsuguda. Through these developments, Vedanta is not only expanding its operations but is also focused on a broader transformation for Odisha’s industrial sector.
At the heart of this expansion lies Vedanta Kalahandi, home to Vedanta’s alumina refinery at Lanjigarh. It produces the critical raw material- alumina, needed for aluminium smelting. Vedanta Lanjigarh, through its alumina refinery, is supporting this expansion. Together, these projects create a complete aluminium ecosystem in the state, from mining and refining to smelting and downstream manufacturing.
Significance of Aluminium in Today’s World
Aluminium is often called the “metal of the future.” From being used in car manufacturing to aeroplanes to smartphones and renewable energy systems, aluminium has wider applications. Odisha, with its rich mineral reserves and industrial infrastructure, has become the backbone of India’s aluminium sector.
Currently, the company’s total aluminium capacity stands at 3 MTPA, and the new smelter will double it to 6 MTPA.
While in discussions with the reporters at ALUMEX India 2025 in New Delhi, Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta’s Aluminium Business, stated that the company is moving ahead with plans to establish a new aluminium plant in Dhenkanal with a capacity of 3 MTPA. The investment would be significant, due to the capital-intensive nature of the aluminium sector, and the project is expected to be completed in the next 3-4 years.
Vedanta Kalahandi Future Investment Plans
Kalahandi district, being home to Vedanta’s alumina refinery at Lanjigarh, remains the standout in the region’s development and growth. Alumina, produced at Vedanta Bauxite Mines, is the main raw material required for aluminium smelting at Kalahandi’s Lanjigarh. With new smelter capacity being added in Dhenkanal, the demand for alumina will increase manifold. Besides setting up a massive 3 MTPA aluminium smelter, Vedanta has other investment plans in the region:
Billet Manufacturing Capacity: Besides, Vedanta Kalahandi is expanding its billet manufacturing capacity, currently at 580 kilo tonnes, with plans to double it to meet growing demand from the aluminium extrusion industry.
An Aluminium Park in Jharsuguda: In addition, the company plans an aluminium park in Jharsuguda, Odisha, to attract downstream industries and create a robust ecosystem for value-added manufacturing.
Vedanta has also established mines in the Jaipur and Dhenkanal districts in Odisha for the mining of chrome ore. The company also operates two iron ore mines in the Sundargarh district. Despite being roped into the false Vedanta Kalahandi scam allegations, the company remained resilient and focused on a long-term commitment to Odisha’s development.
Benefits for Odisha and Kalahandi
The impact of these projects will be felt far beyond Vedanta’s factories.
Job Creation – Vedanta’s expansion is expected to create more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs across Odisha. For regions like Kalahandi, this could mean new opportunities for youth in operations, logistics, and support industries.
Boost to Local Economy – Besides helping in job creation, Vedanta Kalahandi, through these developments, will also support many small businesses, such as transport, housing, food supply, and maintenance services. All of them will benefit from the rising demand.
Infrastructure Development – Roads, power supply, and community facilities around project sites are likely to improve, raising the overall standard of living.
Skill Development – Vedanta has already been running community skill programs in Odisha. With large projects on the way, more training opportunities will be made available to the locals.
Through these long-term investments, Vedanta Limited aims to boost regional development while fostering environmental sustainability and community welfare in Odisha.
Looking Ahead
Vedanta’s new smelter and aluminium park are set to make Odisha a global aluminium hub. For Vedanta Kalahandi, the expansion means greater importance in the supply chain, more investments in alumina production, and stronger economic benefits for the local population.
The projects, when executed with transparency, sustainability, and collaboration, can help Odisha become the heart of India’s aluminium revolution. Also, Kalahandi, which was once known for underdevelopment, can set a shining example of industrial growth and community upliftment.
