How to Propel Your Accounting Career Forward

How to Propel Your Accounting Career Forward

You only have one life, so make the most of it by pursuing a profession you enjoy and being as successful as you can. Here are six tips for maximising your accounting career.

1. Complete your AAT requirements

With an AAT credential, such as an AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting or an AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting, you’ll have access to a lot more employment choices and a better chance of landing a position that is aligned with your interests.

Employers can evaluate the quality of your accountancy abilities, knowledge, and experience by looking at professional credentials from a recognised organisation like the AAT. Your chances of landing your preferred roles will increase if you can demonstrate your qualification as a reference when you apply for jobs and internships.

Qualifications represent the cornerstones of success and demonstrate to companies that you have what it takes to succeed. Investing the time to obtain your credentials makes sense if you want to enhance your career and land your dream position.

2. Select a specialty

The field of accounting is vast and contains many distinct subfields.

You can position yourself to stand out from the crowd by selecting a specialization—a subject that is genuinely of interest to you. Why is that important? You’ll find the task more fascinating and better enjoy the time you spend working if you’re actually invested in something, which means you have an interest, talent, or love for some component of it.

Finding a specific area of accounting that you are interested in can be difficult; however, you’ll usually discover that you have a few distinct areas that you naturally gravitate toward. Make a checklist, research the areas involved, and identify the tasks that are most suited to you on a personal level.

3. Apply for jobs in your ideal business or organisation

Everybody has goals and aspirations. One of the main paths to developing a profession that you truly love is undoubtedly securing your dream employment role. However, getting there is likely going to take some time; it’s not something you can do overnight (although some people do!).

Before you can land that ideal job, you’ll need to advance up the career ladder by gaining knowledge and experience in other positions first.

The key to long-term employment at your ideal organisation is to recognise the positions that can propel you closer to your ideal role.

If you’re having problems narrowing down your alternatives for a dream career, consider the qualities you are seeking in a job and employer. Then, produce a list of the benefits and drawbacks of each option.

4. Set up your own accountancy practice

Taking the risk and opening your own business can be a terrific opportunity to build a career in accounting that you truly love.

The ultimate professional objective for many accountants is to run their own firm. You’ll enjoy more freedom and autonomy when you run your own business, and self-employed people typically have happier jobs than those who aren’t.

Naturally, starting your own practice can be really difficult, so you shouldn’t embark on it carelessly. Furthermore, it is associated with some degree of personal risk. As such, you may need to put insurance for accountant policies in place. Nevertheless, working for yourself can be among the most satisfying aspects of a career in accounting, both in terms of satisfaction and monetary reward.

5. Earn chartered status

In the realm of accounting, a chartered accountant is most likely one of the most specialised positions you can achieve. As such, it should come as no surprise that many accountants who are looking for a rewarding career would target this position.

Chartered Accountants are experts in the accounting and financial operations of businesses. They advise employers on how to maximise profit and efficiency through financial policies, and they typically play a more strategic position in an organisation than a regular accountant does.

You must complete coursework with an accredited Chartered Accountancy organisation, such as ACCA, CIMA, or ICAEW, in order to become a Chartered Accountant.

With all of the major Chartered accountancy organisations in the UK, AAT graduates have access to a fast-track route to Chartered status, which can make becoming a Chartered Accountant much simpler and quicker
